Congratulations to Dr. Christine Friedenreich, who has been elected as a member of the Scientific Council of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (www.iarc.fr) for a four year period starting in January 2018.
The principal responsibilities of Scientific Council members are the evaluation of the scientific activities of the Agency and the provision of scientific advice to the Governing Council and the Director of the Agency. There are 25 members of the Scientific Council representing each country that provides financial support to the Agency. Dr. Friedenreich has a longstanding association with the IARC as she completed her first year of postdoctoral training there in 1990-1991, participated in the writing of the IARC Cancer Prevention Handbook on Physical Activity and Weight Control in 2000, and was the IARC Visiting Scientist in 2004-2005. She has collaborated on numerous IARC research studies particularly with the European Prospective Investigation on Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), the largest cohort study of >520,000 Europeans from 23 different centers across Europe that was initiated and coordinated through the IARC.
