Congratulations to Dr. Cheryl Peters and her colleagues on their recent successful CIHR Project Scheme Grant that was awarded to Dr. Paul Villeneuve of Carleton University. The five-year grant entitled “Patterns of mortality and cancer incidence among adults who live near Canadian nuclear power plants: A population-based longitudinal study of CanCHEC participants between 1991 and 2016.” They will examine patterns of cancer incidence and mortality among adults who live close to five nuclear power plants in Canada using data from the Canadian Census which includes over 13 million adults in Canada who are tracked annually. They will use record linkage to identify cancer cases and will create exposure surfaces that map differences in ionizing radiation around these plants to estimate how health risks vary by these exposures. This study will provide evidence about the population health impacts of exposure to ionizing radiation for both public and regulatory agencies. The co-investigators on this study include Drs Mark Goldberg, Lauren Pinault, Daniel Rainham, Michael Tjepkema.
